Metric Conversion 2

The kilometer has a factor of 10 3 or 1 x 10 3. This means the number is 3 places to the left of the decimal point: 1000.0 or 1000.
Set up a ratio to see the relatioship between kilometer and meter.
1 x 10 3 1000
________ or _______ = 1000
1 x 10 0 1
There is a difference of 1000, and since a kilometer is larger than a meter, there must be 1000 meters for every kilometer.
a. 1 kilometer = 1000 meters
b. Another way to work out conversions is to set up a ratio of comparison.
1 kilometer is 10 3 meters as 22 kilometers is to x meters:
1 22
________ = _________
1 x 10 3 x
1 x 10 3 is the same as 1000.
Now, cross multiply and solve for x algebraically.
x = (22) ( 1000)
x = 22,000 meters
b. 22 kilometers = 22,000 meters
